Festival of Sun

Makar Sankranti is one of the most auspicious day for the Hindus. Sankranti means the day the Sun enters a new zodiac sign according to Hindu astrology.
Makar means Capricorn and Sankranti is transition. Transition of the Sun from Sagittarius to Capricorn is known as Makar Sankranti.
On Makar Sankranti day the Sun begins its ascendancy and journey into the Northern Hemisphere, and thus it signifies an event wherein the Gods seem to remind their children that 'Tamaso Ma Jyotir Gamaya'. May you go higher & higher - to more & more Light and never to darkness..
In Maharashtra on the Sankranti day people exchange multi-colored tilguds made from til (sesame seeds) and sugar and til-laddus made from til and jaggery. While exchanging tilguls as tokens of goodwill people greet each other saying – ‘til-gul ghya, god god bola’ meaning ‘accept these tilguls and speak sweet words’. The under-lying thought in the exchange of tilguls is to forget the past ill-feelings and hostilities and resolve to speak sweetly and remain friends.

Since it was te first festival after I got married, I was suppose to wear a black saree with jewellery made of sesame seeds

We also make Rangoli's ( design made by a white powder ) in front of the house. This one was done by me......

We also have Mehendi on our hands ( designs made on hand with Heena).... This one is made by me.. it took me 2 hrs to make it

And check this out.......

Prachi, you are wearing a beautiful sari. I was born and raised in New Zealand where we had many Indian families living. One family owned what we called a green grocers (sold fruit and vegetables) I loved going into their store not just to buy my produce but to see the saris the ladys wore. They had many of wonderful colours design.
